BCN Sotamar Project

A more sustainable future
The context
Since the 1992 Olympic Games, Barcelona has undergone a spectacular transformation, opening up to the sea like never before. The creation of the Port Vell, Nova Bocana and Port Olímpic have marked the beginning of a new era in which citizens and visitors have been able to enjoy the accessibility and views of the Mediterranean Sea, transforming the seafront into a vibrant leisure space, culture and sustainability.
The beach of Sant Sebastià, where the first pilot project of BCN Sotamar will be implemented, according to the Biodiversity Atlas of the Barcelona City Council, stands out as one of the most biodiverse marine areas of the city. This information highlights the importance of this area not only as a recreational area for citizens, but also as a key to the conservation of marine life and scientific research.
The sea in danger
What are we up against?
The ocean faces a number of significant challenges that threaten its health, biodiversity and ability to provide vital ecosystem services. Deep changes in the ocean affect its functionality, which is related to climate stability.
Climate change
Sea pollution
Unsustainable fishing
Degradation of habitats
Lack of awareness
The commitment
Objectives of Sustainable Development
The BCN Sotamar project arises from the growing need to preserve Barcelona’s marine ecosystems, which have been affected by environmental degradation and the effects of climate change.
The project is aligned with the new Nature Restoration Law approved by the European Parliament and with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda.
In addition, it is part of the city’s effort to create a sustainable legacy on the occasion of the 37th America’s Cup.

What do we want to achieve?

Regenerate marine biodiversity in Barcelona waters

Promote the sustainable blue economy

Fostering technological innovation in marine conservation

Raise awareness and make citizens participate
With the BCN Sotamar project, we are opening a new chapter in the history of Barcelona: one where the sea is not just a horizon to contemplate, but a living space integrated into the essence of the city.
Solutions
How do we do it?
The BCN Sotamar project is designed to address the environmental, economic and social challenges related to Barcelona’s marine ecosystems, while promoting a viable and environmentally friendly blue economy. One of the most distinctive aspects of the project is its willingness to actively involve the local community in all its actions, ensuring that the benefits are felt both environmentally and socially.
It also seeks to establish collaborations that allow for innovation in marine conservation solutions. The project is designed to evolve over time, adapting to the changing needs of marine ecosystems and incorporating new technological and scientific developments.
Education, awareness-raising and citizen connection
Creation of educational programs and didactic materials to promote marine conservation and the responsible use of water resources. Workshops, lectures and interactive activities involving both the local community and visitors to the city will be organized.

Collaboration and innovation
BCN Sotamar is committed to establishing collaborations with academic institutions, companies, NGOs and other relevant actors to promote the research and development of new technologies for marine conservation. Innovation will also be encouraged through forums, workshops and joint projects that allow the exchange of knowledge and the application of advanced solutions.
Long-term impact and sustainability
BCN Sotamar includes mechanisms to evaluate and communicate the impact of its actions, as well as to ensure its sustainability over time. Strategies will be developed to ensure the continuity of the project, including the search for new sources of funding and the diversification of activities.
The methodology
Diagnosis
This is the first phase of the project where an exhaustive analysis of the marine environment of Barcelona is carried out, with special attention to the areas selected for the intervention, the Sant Sebastià beach. During this stage, detailed data is collected on the current state of the marine ecosystems, including existing biodiversity, pollution levels, water quality, marine currents and other relevant environmental factors.
